Why this exists

I spent fifteen years in emergency nursing before I moved into the classroom. The ED teaches you to read a room fast, because what you notice in the first minute usually shapes everything after it.

When I started teaching, I assumed my clinical experience would carry me. It prepared me to teach nursing. It did not prepare me for the rest of it, including the part where you can plan a good class and still lose the room before you say a word.

Connection before content sounds like a nice idea until you watch it decide whether anything you say actually lands. Knowing that does not tell you what to do about it on a Tuesday morning with a full class and no reliable way to tell who is actually with you.
